Will it matter if you don’t take your breakfast? Recently a test was given in the United States. Those tested included people of different ages, from 12 to 83. During the experiment, these people were given all kinds of breakfasts and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Special tests were set up to see how well their bodies worked when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast. The results show that if a person eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work with better effect (效果) than if he or she has no breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person works with his brains. If a student eats fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen with more attention in class. Contrary to (与……相反) what many people believe, if you don’t eat breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry at noon that they eat too much for lunch, and end up gaining weight instead of losing. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce (减少) your other meals.
56. During the test, those who were tested were given        .
    A. no breakfast at                  B. very rich breakfast
    C. little food for breakfast        D. different foods or none
57. The passage mentions(提到) that many people believe that if you don’t eat breakfast, you will        .
    A. lose weight                      B. not lose weight
    C. be healthier                     D. gain a lot of weight
58. Which of the following is not true according to the passage?
    A. Poor breakfasts affect (影响) those who work with brains.
    B. Morning diet may cause one to get fatter.
    C. Reducing lunch and supper is of less value in weight-losing.
    D. Eating less in lunch and supper may help to lose weight.

When friends come to visit us in the evening, they spend their time telling us they are in a hurry and looking at their watches. It isn’t that our friends are all very busy; it is just that we haven’t got a television. People think that we are very strange. “But what do you do in the evening?” they are always asking. The answer is very simple. Both my wife and I have hobbies. We certainly don’t spend our evenings staring at the walls. My wife enjoys cooking and painting and often attends evening classes in foreign languages. This is very useful as we often go abroad for our holidays. I collect stamps and I’m always busy with my collection. Both of us enjoy listening to the music and playing chess together.
Sometimes there are power cuts and we have no electricity( 电 ) in the house. This does not worry us ; we just light candles and carry on with what we were doing before. Our friends, however, are lost---no television! ---So they don’t know what to do. On such evenings our house is very full; they all come to us. They all have a good time. Instead of sitting in silence in front of the television, everybody talks and plays games.

We are already familiar with computers-computers work for us at home , in offices , in factories .But it is also true that many children today are using computers at school before they can write. What does this mean for the future ? Are these children lucky or not ?
Many people who don,t know about computers think of them as machines that children play with. They worry that children don,t learn from experience but just from pressing a button and that is not good for them .They think that children are growing up not knowing about the real world.
But people who understand more about computers see that computers can be very good for children. A computer can help them to learn about the real world more quickly, to learn what they  want to learn and to think for themselves. And for the future ,don,t we need people who can think clearly, who know how to get information quickly and use it well ? what do you think?

Alf’s wife has never discovered that she married a dustman and she never will , for Alf has just found another job . he will soon be working in an office as a junior clerk. He will be earning only half as much as he used to. But he feels that his rise in status (地位)is well worth the loss of money.
