Blind from birth, I have never had the opportunity to see myself and have been completely dependent on the image I create in the eye of the observer. To date, it has not been narcissistic(自我陶醉的).
There are those who think that since I can’t see, I obviously also cannot hear. Very often people will talk with me at the top of their lungs, pronouncing each word very carefully. Conversely, people will also often whisper, thinking that since my eyes don’t work, my ears don’t either.
For example, when I go to the airport and ask the ticket agent for assistance to the plane, he or she will invariably(总是) pick up the phone, call a ground hostess and whisper:“Hi, Jane, we’ve got a 76 here.”
On the other hand, others know that of course I can hear, but believe that I can’t talk.Often, therefore, when my wife and I go out to dinner, a waiter or waitress will ask Kit if “he would like a drink” to which I respond that “indeed he would”.
The toughest misconception(误解) of all is the view that because I can’t see, I can’t work.. I was turned down by over forty law firms because of my blindness, even though my qualifications(资格) included a cum laude(以优等成绩毕业者) degree from Harvard College and a good ranking in my Harvard Law school class.
Fortunately, this view of limitation and exclusion is beginning to change...

Flight attendants(服务员) are part of those working on airplane passenger flights. They serve as a connection between the airline and its passengers. They satisfy the personal needs and comforts of the passengers while carrying out normal duties. They try to make the passengers’ trip so enjoyable that they will want to fly with the airline again. A qualified doctor who rarely practised but instead devoted his life to writing. He once said,“Medicine is my lawful wife, and literature is my lover.”Russian writer Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, was a great playwright(剧作家) and one of the masters of the modern short story.
When Clekhov entered the Moscow University Medical School in 1879, he started to publish hundreds of comic short stories to support his family. After he graduated, he wrote regularly for a local daily newspaper.
As a writer he was extremely fast, often producing a short story in an hour or less. Checkhov’s medical and science experience can be seen through the indifference(冷漠) many of his characters show to tragic(悲剧的) events. In 1892,he became a full-time writer and published some of his most memorable stories. Chekhov often wrote about the sufferings of life in small towns of Russia.Tragic events controlled his characters who were filled with feelings of hopelessness and despair.
It is often said that nothing happens in Chekhov’s stories and plays. He made up for this with his exciting technique for developing drama within his characters. Chekhov’s works combined the calm attitude of a scientist and doctor with the sensitivity(敏感) of an artist. Some of Chekhov’s works were translated into Chinese as early as the 1940s. The science of meteorology(气象学) is concerned with the study of the structure, state, and behavior of the atmosphere. The subject may be approached from several directions, but the scene cannot be fully appreciated from any one vantage point. Different views must be combined to give the whole picture.
One may consider the condition of the atmosphere at a given moment and attempt to predict changes from that condition over a period of a few hours to a few days ahead. This approach is covered by the branch of the science called synoptic meteorology.
Synoptic meteorology is the scientific basis of the technique of weather forecasting by means of the preparation and analysis of weather maps and aerological diagrams(高空气象图). The practical importance of the numerous applications of weather forecasting cannot be overestimated. In serving the needs of shipping, navigation, agriculture, industry and many other interests and fields of human activity with accurate weather warnings and professional forecast advice, great benefits can be earned in the form of the saving of human life and property and in economic advantages of various kinds. One important purpose of meteorology is constantly to try, through advanced study and research, to increase our knowledge of the atmosphere with the aim of improving the accuracy(精确性) of weather forecasts.
The tools needed to advance our knowledge in this way are the disciplines of mathematics and physics applied to solve meteorological problems. The use of these tools forms that branch of the science called dynamic(动力的) meteorology.

第二节(共3小题,每小题2分,满分6分)
    阅读下面短文,简要回答问题。
SHISHMAREF, an Eskimo village on an island off northwestern Alaska, is falling into the ocean. Giant storm waves have so hit the place—once well buffered by sea ice—that villagers voted in 2002 to leave their ancestral home for the mainland. They are being called one of the first refugees(难民)of global warming.
“We tend to describe climate change in terms that are abstract—a one degree rise in temperature, an increase in greenhouse gases—but when waves wash away a village, that’s concrete and very emotional,” says Igor Krupnik, an expert at the National Museum of Natural History. “When they lose a piece of their land, they aren’t just losing a certain number of square miles. They are losing part of their history and their memory. They are losing childhood events and grandparents’ tales.”
Before temperatures began to rise in Shishmaref about 30 years ago, 20 to 30 miles of hard sea ice protected the village from powerful fall storms. But the natives say the ice doesn’t freeze as solidly or as soon as it used to and now stretches only six or seven miles, leaving the community of 600 people more exposed. Storms have swept houses into the ocean.
The villagers’ plan is to move to Tin Creek, a site on the Alaska mainland 12 miles away, and they have received $180 million from the government. Residents hope that in their new community they’ll be able to maintain their close ties, continue hunting animals, and keep fishing, much as their ancestors have done for centuries. “People are asking why the government should be spending so much money on so few people,” said a government official. “But people in Alaska are like everyone else. We want to help keep their culture alive.”
73. Find in the passage a word closest in meaning to the underlined word “buffered”.
74. According to the villagers’ saying, what do we know about the sea ice around Shishmaref in the past? (回答词数不超过8个)
75. What is the villagers’ main purpose to rebuild their community?(回答词数不超过6个)

Experts say deaths from infectious diseases can be greatly reduced at very little cost with the use of some common devices and medicines. The United Nations Population Fund magazine has listed the six most effective tools for life in a developing country.
One tool for life in developing countries is a bed net to cover a person’s bed while sleeping. The cost of a bed net is about four dollars. Bed nets prevent mosquito insects from biting people during the night. Mosquitoes carry malaria, a disease that kills more than one-million people every year. The World Health Organization says bed nets can reduce the number of child deaths from malaria by 25%.
Medicine to treat malaria is also important for people in developing countries. Anti-malarial drugs are considered 95% effective and cost as little as 12 cents for pill.
Other kinds of medicine can treat tuberculosis. Tuberculosis spread through the air from one person to another. The bacteria attack the lungs. It takes at least months for medicine to kill all T-B bacteria. A full treatment costs about ten dollars. It is considered 95% effective in curing the disease.
Antibiotics to fight pneumonia are also important. Pneumonia is a serious infection of the lungs, which can cause death if untreated. Most treatments are considered 90% effective and cost as little as twenty-seven cents for each pill.
The U-N Population Fund says vaccine medicines can prevent the childhood disease measles. The Vaccine costs twenty-six cents for every treatment including the equipment to inject the vaccine.
Finally, a simple liquid called Oral Dehydration Therapy can treat a severe lack of fluids in the body. Many children around the world suffer this condition caused by diarrhea.  Oral Dehydration Therapy to restore body liquids costs about thirty cents.

书面表达范例:
I’m writing to tell about the discussion we’ve had in the recent class meeting about whether Senior 3 students should take a lot of tonics to keep fit.
Opinions are divided on the topic. Sixty percent of the students think it unnecessary to take any tonics. They hold the opinion that taking tonics will cause them to put on weight, which is bad for their health. What’s more, the price of tonics is rather high. However, forty percent of the students point out that Senior 3 students have a lot more homework to do every day. So many students get tired and tonics can help to refresh themselves. In addition, they can’t afford time to have sports.
Personally, having right food is more important. The best way to stay healthy is to take exercise regularly.
