Step II Warming up
In this part the students read a short passage about the McDonald’s history and answer four questions. Through reading the students can learn more about the McDonald’s and develop their interest in studying English. Then let them introduce the Chinese traditional menus.
T: We’re familiar with the McDonald’s and some students are sure to have gone there to enjoy a wonderful meal. But do you know how the McDonald’s started and grew? Now read the short passage quickly and choose the best answers.
How the McDonald's business started and grew
There were two McDonald’s ——Mac and Dick ——and they were brothers. In 1948 they owned a restaurant in California, USA. They liked working in the restaurant, but they got tired of the customers ordering so many different things to eat.
“If we gave customers a smaller menu, we could make some of the food before they came, and they wouldn’t have to wait so long for their meals,” said one of the brothers. The other brother agreed and said, “And if we made the customers come to the counter, we wouldn’t need any waiters or waitresses. We could also use plastic plates so that there wouldn’t be anything to wash.”
These were such good ideas that the McDonald brothers used them and the customers were very pleased. They got their meals very quickly ——in less than a minute —— and they paid only 15 cents for each hamburger and 10 cents for fries. The first McDonald’s restaurant had no seats for customers to sit on. This meant that people had to take their food away, and no one had to clean up any tables after them.
Then a man called Ray Kroc came to the brothers and asked to buy their business. They agreed to sell it to him for $ 27 million. After that, people paid Ray Kroc to open their own restaurants using the McDonald’s name and menu. Before long, there were McDonald’s restaurants all over the United States. Nowadays, they are all over the world—— even in China and Russia. The most successful McDonald’s business is in Hong Kong, China. The Hong Kong McDonald’s sells more hamburgers every day than any other McDonald’s in the world.
McDonald’s restaurants are so successful because children love going to them. They like the food and they like the toys and games they can get at McDonald’s.

Ss: 鲁菜、川菜、粤菜、闽菜、苏菜、浙菜、湘菜、徽菜,……
T: Right. Eight kinds of famous menus in China. They can be divided into two series: the northern menu and the southern menu
Step III Speaking & Writing
This exercise is for students to examine diets and see how balanced they are. If they are not balanced it might be useful for students to discuss why. Then let the students try to make a balanced meal of their own.
T: Now it’s your turn to make a menu together with your classmates. First, I’ll divide you into two groups. One group makes a menu from the north and the other from the south. Then discuss with your group members whether your menu is balanced or not and why.
