Step I   Leading in
T: Good morning afternoon, class!
Ss: Good morning afternoon, Mr./Ms…
T: In this class, we are going to study the Grammar in Unit 1-----the Subject. Now look at the following sentences. Please pick out the subjects and discuss with your partner what can be used as Subject. (Show the following sentences on the PowerPoint.)
1. Lance Armstrong set the world record for the fastest average speed at the Tour de France.
2. The wounded taken from the front need immediate treatment in the field hospital.
3. To win the Golden Globe Award is a great honour for a film-maker.
4. Taking exercise early in the morning has become part of her retired life.
5. Whether Jenny will pass the interview depends on her confidence in herself.
6. 2008 is the year when the 29th Olympic Games will be held in Beijing, China.
7. It was late in the evening when the accident happened at the corner of the street.
8. “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush” is my favourite proverb.
9. It is quite entertaining to read these accounts of strange and unusual feats and facts.
Step II   Grammar
After checking the answers, students discuss what can be used as Subject. The teacher helps sum up the grammar. And show the following on the PowerPoint.
T: What can be used as Subject?
Ss: A noun, an adjective, nonfinite verb, it, a nominative personal pronoun and the subject clause and so on can be used as Subject.
T: Then what is Subject?
S1: I can pick out the subject in a sentence, but I don’t know what is Subject.
S2: The subject must be related to the verb.
T: Good! Now look at the screen and read the sentence together.
1 The subject of a sentence is the person, place, thing, or idea that is doing or being something. You can find the subject of a sentence if you can find the verb. Ask the question, "Who or what 'verbs' or 'verbed'?" and the answer to that question is the subject.
For instance, in the sentence "The computers in the Learning Center must be replaced," the verb is "must be replaced." What must be replaced? The computers. So the subject is "computers." A simple subject is the subject of a sentence stripped of modifiers. The simple subject of the following sentence is issue:
The really important issue of the conference, stripped of all other considerations, is the morality of the nation.
Sometimes, though, a simple subject can be more than one word, even an entire clause. In the following sentence -
What he had already forgotten about computer repair could fill whole volumes,
-the simple subject is not "computer repair," nor is it "what he had forgotten," nor is it "he." Ask what it is that "could fill whole volumes." Your answer should be that the entire underlined clause is the simple subject.
In English, the subject of a command, order, or suggestion - you, the person being directed - is usually left out of the sentence and is said to be the understood subject:
1 [You] Step lively there or I'll leave you behind!
2 Before assembling the swing set, [you] read these instructions carefully.
For purposes of sentence analysis, the do-er or the initiator of action in a sentence is referred to as the agent of the sentence. In an active sentence, the subject is the agent:
1 The Johnsons added a double garage to their house.
2 The jury returned a verdict of manslaughter.
In a passive sentence, the agent is not the subject. In fact, sometimes a passive sentence will not contain an agent.
1 The dean's report was reviewed by the faculty senate.
2 Three cities in the country's interior were bombed.
Step III   Practice
Ask students to do Exercise 2 on Page 6. Students are given two minutes and two minutes later check the answers with the whole class.
T: Are you clear what can be used as Subject?
Ss: "Who or what 'verbs' or 'verbed'?" and the answer to that question is the subject. A noun, an adjective, nonfinite verb, it, a nominative personal pronoun and the subject clause and so on can be used as Subject.
T: Quite good! Now do Exercise 2 on Page 6. Two minutes later we will check the answers.
Step IV  Workbook
Do the grammar exercises on Workbook.
First ask students to do the exercises individually, then check the answers with the whole class.
T: After doing theses exercises I’m sure you have a better understanding Subject. I hope this will help you to be clearer about the sentence structure and you will write correct sentences. Today’s homework Finish all of the Vocabulary and Grammar exercises on the workbook. That’s all for today.
Step V Homework: Finish all of the Vocabulary and Grammar exercises and write Exercise 3 in their exercise books.
